Do you have programs for children?

Yes.

We have school based after school programs, family literacy programs and fee based summer camp.

Do you just teach people how to read?

Yes.

Do you need a referral to participate in the program?

No. A referral or recommendation from another agency is not required for participation

Participation in programs for adults is voluntary. However, if an adult is mandated to attend from another agency, documentation must be provided

How do you enroll in the adult education program?

Step 1:  Call the Lake Charles office at 494-7000 or the Grand Lake office at 598-5334 to register.

Step 2:  Attend your scheduled intake session and complete testing.

Step 3:  Participate in a mandatory orientation.

Step 4:  Begin class or tutoring.

How much does the program cost?

For the adult basic education, computer basics and ESL program, there is a registration fee of $25.  All books and materials are provided.  Tuition is not charged.  A one-time waiver of the registration may be granted.  Contact the office at 494-7000 or email info@literacyswla.org for details.

What are your Hours of Operation?

The Literacy Council’s office in Lake Charles is open Monday – Thursday from 9am to 5pm and Friday from 9am to 3pm.  The office is closed for lunch from 12:30pm – 1:30pm.  The facility is open for class Monday – Thursday from 8:30am to 8:00pm.   Please call the office at 494-7000 for a class schedule.

The Grand Lake office is open Monday – Friday from 8:30am – 2pm.  Call 598-5334 for a class schedule. 

What if I need a letter proving that I am enrolled in your program?

An attendance record will be provided upon request.  The attendance record will document the number of hours attended on a bi-weekly basis.  Should more detailed information regarding attendance be required, please contact April Lowe at 494-7000 or alowe@literacyswla.org

Where are you located?

The Literacy Council has an office in Lake Charles at the Central School Arts & Humanities Center at 809 Kirby St.  We are located on the main floor.  Parking is at the rear of the building on Reid St. and Pujo St.

We also manage the Cameron Parish Adult Education program.  It is located at the Cameron Community Action Agency site at 951 S. Highway 84 in Grand Lake.
